LEGACY & INSIGHTS
The Emmys Are Going Free on Amazon. Free Has Ended Before.
Emmys streaming free on Amazon Prime Video starts next September, a condition the Television Academy set. What that free stream costs is the open question.
Most of us now pay one app for football, another for a new series, a third for movie night. So when the Television Academy announced that Emmys streaming free on Amazon Prime Video begins next September, no Prime subscription required, it sounded almost too generous. (New York Times, AP)
For the first time in its history, the Emmys leave broadcast television, in a six-year deal. The Academy says free was its demand from the start. What nobody has said: whether you will need an Amazon account, whether ads will run, or what Amazon is paying. Academy chairman Cris Abrego would not give the Times a number, and reports conflict. Adweek puts the fee near $15 million a year, which Netflix Junkie attributes to Variety. Cord Cutters News relayed $120 million in total. Nobody has confirmed either. The four networks paid about $9.5 million a year together, the Times reports, for U.S. rights. The new deal covers the world.
Who Asked for Emmys Streaming Free?
Not Amazon, according to the AP. The Academy made free viewing a demand from the start and put it to every suitor. It could set that term because the broadcast networks were not bidding hard. The Times reports they had grown frustrated that Emmy voters favored cable and streaming shows, and seemed unlikely to make an aggressive joint bid.
Mike Hopkins, who runs Prime Video, told the Times he wants to “age the audience down.” Amazon’s announcement says streaming the Emmys free is a way of delivering entertainment to “our customers worldwide.” (Amazon) Notice the word customers. We will come back to it.
Free Has Ended Before
In 2016, Twitter streamed 10 Thursday Night Football games free, for a reported $10 million. (Tubefilter) In 2017, Amazon took the package for a reported $50 million, and games required a Prime subscription. (CBS Sports, NFL.com) The company that now holds the Emmys is the company that put those games behind Prime.
That is a precedent, not a forecast. Free is written into this deal, and nothing reported says it ends. The Oscars follow a similar shape: free on YouTube worldwide, and to YouTube TV subscribers in the U.S., from 2029 through 2033. (NBC DFW) Disney will carry the Grammys on ABC, Hulu and Disney+ starting next year. (KSL)
Even now, “free” is slippery on Prime Video. Amazon’s own 2026 guide calls the ACM Awards free to stream live. (Amazon) DIRECTV’s guide tells readers they need a Prime Video subscription. (DIRECTV) The sources disagree, and we could not settle it. That tells you how quickly free blurs on a platform built around subscriptions.
The Numbers That Pushed It Out
The Emmys drew about 16 million viewers twenty years ago and about 11 million a decade ago. This year’s telecast on NBC drew 6.8 million, fewer than the Oscars, the Grammys or the Video Music Awards, the Times reports.
| Broadcast | Viewers |
|---|---|
| Emmys, about 20 years ago | 16 million |
| Emmys, about 10 years ago | 11 million |
| Emmys, 2026 (NBC) | 6.8 million |
| Oscars, 2026 (ABC) | 17.9 million |
| Grammys, 2026 (CBS) | 14.4 million |
| Video Music Awards, last month (CBS, MTV) | 9 million |
Streaming held 49% of U.S. television viewing in July, against 19.5% for broadcast, in Nielsen’s July figures, a month the World Cup still lifted broadcast. (Cord Cutters News) Of the 19 prime-time awards handed out last month, 18 went to streaming or cable programs. The one broadcast win went to a show CBS canceled. Viewers and winners had already left, and the Academy is following them.
What Each Side Says It Gets
The Academy wanted a partner it did not have to find again every year. Abrego told the Times that under the old rotation, planning sometimes did not begin until March or April. One partner for six years, he told the AP, ends the habit of starting over. The show keeps its September date next year, though he suggested that could change later. (Television Academy, AP)
Amazon wanted live events. It already has weekly NFL games, an NBA package and the ACM Awards, the Times says. Netflix has been buying live rights too, from the NFL to Major League Baseball to the women’s World Cup. Live is the one kind of programming a viewer cannot save for later, which may be why every platform is buying it. That is our reading. Platforms like these earn from subscriptions and advertising, and Amazon added ads to Prime Video in 2024, Gizmodo reports.
The AP adds one more detail. Abrego described Prime Video as a television hub, and the biggest winners at the last two Emmys, Widow’s Bay and The Studio, can both be watched there through a partnership with Apple TV. The AP does not say what that costs.
What Free Sits On Top Of
It helps to remember why so many people left cable. In a 2017 TiVo survey, BGR reported, price was the most common reason people gave for cutting pay TV, with cheaper options like Netflix and Hulu on offer. The Bureau of Labor Statistics found that cable prices rose about 6.1% a year from 1983 to 1999, roughly twice the 3.2% rise in consumer prices overall. That index now covers live-streaming TV services too, and OfficialData.org’s reading of the BLS figures puts it near 595 in 2026, against 100 in 1983.
Streaming has a bill of its own now. One LendingTree analysis found the average American holds 4.5 digital subscriptions and spends about $84 a month. Its 15-service bundle rose 49% since 2020. That bundle includes music and software, so it is not a streaming-only number. (Fox 13, citing LendingTree)
What to Watch After Emmys Streaming Free Begins
Here is our view, and it is a view, not a finding. The Academy was right to demand free. A free night keeps the show open to everyone who has ever watched it, and that matters. But a free night is also an invitation, and the host sells subscriptions, shipping and ads. Amazon calls viewers customers, and Hopkins told the AP that Amazon will use the year to be “promoting Emmy nominees to our customers.” Amazon’s announcement says Prime Video will use its services to give fans new ways in. Whether a free night turns anyone into a paying customer, nobody has shown.
When the first ceremony streams next September, watch for three things: whether you need an Amazon account, whether ads run, and what Prime Video puts in front of you when the show ends. Those answers will tell you what free was for.
Emmys streaming free is real, it is in writing, and the Academy asked for it. Whether it stays free after the six years has not been said. Enjoy the show. Then check what you are paying for.

Not Established
The available evidence does not establish:
- that viewers will have to pay to watch the Emmys during the six-year deal
- that free access will end when the deal ends, or at any point
- whether viewers will need an Amazon account, or whether ads will run during the telecast
- what Amazon is paying
- that a typical household now pays more for streaming than it once paid for cable; the figures cited here describe different services and are not a like-for-like comparison
- that a free live night converts non-subscribers into paying subscribers; no evidence of conversion was found
